Designing a toolbox to support Self-Regulated Learning as measured by LEMO

PROBLEM OUTLINE

Within higher education - and by extension in the context of lifelong learning - commitment to self-regulated learning (SRL) has become increasingly important. The Learning strategies and study Motivation questionnaire (LEMO; Vanthournout et al., 2016) is designed to map self-regulated learning in students. It is currently administered in several Flemish universities and Universities of applied sciences. However, teachers indicated that they lack knowledge and tools to concretely support student in their development of SRL. Although support materials exist for the support of SRL development with pupils in primary and secondary education, i.e. the ZEG-box (Mommaerts, Dumoulin & Verstappen; 2021), such instruments are lacking for the context of higher education.

OBJECTIVE

The current project aims to develop a toolbox (for at least 3 learning strategies in the LEMO-questionnaire) with support materials to support development of SRL with students in higher education. This toolbox will be tailored to be used in cooperation with the existing LEMO-instrument.

METHODOLOGY

Methodologically, the project uses Educational Design Research (McKenney & Reeves, 2014) as a framework. It involves stakeholders such as teachers and student counselors in the design process. Project activities include:

  • Needs analysis via a questionnaire;

  • Development of the toolbox and accompanying manual, involving users and experts through co-creation workshops;

  • Piloting the toolbox in at least 3 programs and conducting user testing with students and teachers.

(EXPECTED) OUTCOMES
  • A toolbox on supporting the development of at least three learning strategies in students higher education

  • A manual for using the toolbox

  • Presentations at scientific and practice oriented conferences

  • Contributions on social media
