Problem description
In Flanders, one fifth of pregnant women suffer from maternal distress (MD). MD is defined as an emotionally unbalanced state specifically during the period of pregnancy, which may or may not be related to the course of the pregnancy and/or the upcoming delivery. The most frequent complaints are depression and anxiety. The short and long term effects affect the woman, her family and society. Early detection of predictive factors or identifying the presence of MD can provide better and more focused support to this target population in order to prevent or reduce MD during pregnancy. In the Netherlands, an online eHealth tool was developed. This self-management tool proved useful in reducing MD among the Dutch pregnant population. It can potentially offer a solution for screening and supporting pregnant women in Flanders, if adapted to the Flemish context.
Research question
Can a validated eHealth tool aimed at supporting the emotional well-being of Flemish pregnant women contribute to the prevention and reduction of maternal distress?
Methodology
The validity in the Flemish context and the effectiveness of the tool would be evaluated over a period of 2 years. This will involve cross-sectional research followed by a quasi-experimental research design with pre- and post-test combined with qualitative research elements. Maternal emotional health will be evaluated by means of psychometric measurements. The findings reflect the prevalence of MD in Flanders and illustrate the need to support maternal mental health. The existing tool will be adapted for, offered to and subsequently tested and evaluated with Flemish women during the prenatal period.
